It is about to be a New Year and we had to end it with our last selection for #Artist2Watch.
It is never an easy task deciding who we would like to feature for #Artist2Watch and we had a lot of people in mind. But this portion of Kempire Daily was started to highlight up and coming artists. It was supposed to be about the artists that did not have the big record deal or the big machine behind them.
However, we changed our tune because even the artists that did have the “big record deal” still were not getting the attention that they deserved. So the last #Artist2Watch of 2016 is someone who is bringing the focus back to music and not image. Thankfully to artists like Adele and Alessia Cara, not only are artists of substance being celebrated, they are actually selling records.
They have paved the way for an artist like DVSN, who we featured earlier this year. In the same vain as DVSN, RCA recording artist, H.E.R. was birthed this year and a focus was brought back to just the music. When RCA introduced H.E.R. to the media, they did not provide much of anything about who the female vocalist was. There was no bio or picture. It was just a picture of H.E.R.’s silhouette.
It looks like the mystery of H.E.R. intrigued not only fans but also celebrities including Alicia Keys, Wyclef Jean and Bryson Tiller. It also caused the H.E.R.’s debut EP to shoot to #1 on the iTunes R&B album charts and over 80,000 plays in only 10 days on soundcloud.
“The mystery is a metaphor for who I am, or who I was at the time of creating the project,” H.E.R. told the L.A. Times in a phone interview. She also explained that H.E.R. means “Having Everything Revealed.” But it wasn’t just the mystery that caused people to gain interest in H.E.R. The music was bigger than the mystery or any hype. The lack of details on H.E.R.’s image only forced the listeners to pay attention to the voice and the well-written and produced music.
H.E.R. is steadily working on Volume 2 of her project and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for 2017. She is definitely an #Artist2Watch.
