The text message came through with the letters, “dvsn.” Did my friend just pocket dial me? No, it was a duo he thought I should check out.
Kempire Daily receives a lot of music submissions and suggestions all the time. We don’t usually get a chance to listen to everything, but somehow we downloaded their debut album, Sept. 5th. We have been hooked ever since. Just as mysterious as that first text message about them was, the duo has created the same illusive image around them. It forced people to focus on the music and not who they are. Go figure! In today’s music market, most new artists are image first and music later. Not dvsn.
The newly signed OVO Sound artists are from Canada and consist of music producer, Nineteen85 (“Hotline Bling, “0 to 100”) and singer, Daniel Daley. Their rise began this time last year when they released two tracks, “The Line” and “With Me.” The later track was played on Apple’s Beats 1 and catapulted the guys to new found fame.
It should be no surprise that the guys signed to OVO Sound because Nineteen85 has produced several tracks for Drake, most recently “Hotline Bling.” But if you expect their sound to sound anything like Drake then you would be completely wrong. Dvsn is almost a throwback when 90s R&B music was great and popular. A time when it was important for the singer to really understand and emote the lyrics he was singing.
Dvsn achieves success on this front because their album, Sept. 5th, is not only cohesive, but every track is impeccable from production to vocals. Is their music groundbreaking? No. But not every #Artist2Watch has to be incredibly innovative. I believe the goal is to be great at what you do and dvsn is great at creating and singing R&B music.
Dvsn is the dark horse to watch in the music industry right now because it is almost as if they came out of no where. We clearly realize that their journey hasn’t been an overnight journey. But dvsn, like Miguel has done, has gotten us excited again R&B music. Dvsn’s success is a clear sign that R&B music isn’t dead and the love for it either.
Dvsn’s Sept. 5th project is one of the best (if not the best) albums of 2016. If you want an album that you can listen to from beginning till end then this is the project for you. We’re excited to see what this new duo has in store.
You can catch dvsn live in Houston, Texas on Sept. 5th for a special One Night Only concert. The guys are also on Drake’s Summer Sixteen Tour.
