This #Artist2Watch article has actually been years in the making. We have known about this singer/songwriter for a long time and it is only now the world is getting to see just how talented he is.
Unfortunately, like a lot of talent navigating their way in the music industry, Ro James had to wait a very long time before garnering the attention his current single, “Permission” is getting. The Germany-born singer isn’t your typical R&B artist and classifies his sound as “alternative R&B.” This might explain James’ love for artists like Prince. You can definitely hear the influence on songs like, “A.D.I.D.A.S.”
But that isn’t the only Prince-esque qualities that can be ascertain from Ro James’ persona. The mysterious bad boy of R&B isn’t just an act that can be seen reflected in his clothes or music. As a child, James was rebellious and told Billboard he once stole his teacher’s wallet and bought pizza for the entire class. He might be the Peter Pan of R&B actually.
The world almost didn’t get a chance to hear Ro James’ music because for a long time he would only sing at home or in his father’s car. Luckily for us, James decided to start putting his music out and it has been a uphill climb since then. Before the release of his debut EP, Coke, Jack and Cadillacs, James was working behind the scenes as a songwriter and even penned the song, “Use Me,” for Miguel. The two became acquainted from MySpace (Remember that!?) before Miguel became a huge success. It would still be several years before Ro James got his own chance at stardom.
Miguel’s “Use Me” has Ro James’ vibe all over it and dare I say almost his signature style. It is the same sound James would bring to his RCA Records debut, El Dorado. The problem a lot of artists have with their music is the inability to remain consistent. James has continued to do that over the last few years with every release. His previous releases were only the appetizers for El Dorado.
Now James has a hit single, “Permission,” which is currently #14 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs Charts. He is also on tour with the iconic, Maxwell. Things are finally coming together for an artist we have seen with our own eyes climb his way to the top.
Ro James may be new to you, but trust me James’ greatness has been years in the making. El Dorado is just a glimpse at what this #Artist2Watch has in store for everyone. The real question is: Are you ready for a ride in his El Dorado?
