Did that title catch your attention? Good! I know a lot of people focus so much on celebrities’ personal lives instead of their art. However, Troye Sivan’s journey includes being gay, but it is definitely not why we think he is an #Artist2Watch.
It was in the middle of the night, through crusty eyes and still somewhat asleep, I discovered the South African born/Australia raised singer’s music. I randomly was going through Apple Music’s Top Songs when I discovered Troye’s current hit, “YOUTH.” The dreamy and mysterious mood of the song, which is part of Troye’s common sound, captured my attention immediately. Maybe it was just the right moment, since it was like 3 in the morning.
Searching for more Troye Sivan music, I discovered his debut album, Blue Neighbourhood and played it from beginning to end without stopping. There aren’t many artists you can do that with, past or present. “YOUTH” was just the tip of Troye’s talent because songs like “WILD,” “TALK ME DOWN,” and “LOST BOY” make you realize that he isn’t only a talented singer, but an equally talented songwriter. “You don’t have to say I love you to say I love you/ Forget all the shooting stars and all the silver moons/ We’ve been making shades of purple out of red and blue/ Sickeningly sweet like honey, don’t need money/ All I need is you, ” Troye sings on “for him.”
Although, it isn’t necessary to mention that Troye is openly gay and came out on his YouTube. It is a part of his story that he wants to share with his fans. He even displays those struggles in the video for “TALK ME DOWN.” Troye shares a lot of himself, not only through his music, but on his social media. It is the reason he has such an amazing following that totals in the millions. Most of that following includes girls. Who would think a gay male artist could still get the girls swooning? I guess those record executives were wrong years ago. Anything is really possible when there is quality art involved.
Troye Sivan probably did not set out to be a mentor for kids his age. It just kind of happened while following his dream. Luckily for us he did and wasn’t afraid to write pop songs using the word, “He.” However, it was his construction of great music that captured and continues to capture my attention. I see a bright future for Troye Sivan and look forward to more from this #Artist2Watch .
